Clara Nell Barlow Ross
It is with great sadness that we announce the death of Clara Nell Barlow Ross on Monday, June 27, 2016 following a hard fought battle with a progressive illness. She was born April 6, 1948 to Willie Currie and Hilda Smith Barlow of Hattiesburg, MS. She was the youngest of their five children and their only daughter.
Nell was an accomplished nurse and clinical educator. She received her Bachelor of Science in Nursing from Texas Women's University (Denton, TX) in 1970, her Master of Nursing Science from the University of Southern Mississippi (Hattiesburg, MS) in 1984. She held progressive nursing and clinical education positions at Forrest General Hospital until her retirement. A kind and caring person, she was loved and respected by patients, staff and colleagues. Some of Nell's affiliations included the American Nurses' Association, Sigma Theta Tau, and Critical Care Nurses' Association. She was listed in the Who's Who of American Nursing in 1991.
In 1990, she married Dr. Theophilus Erskine Ross, III. In 1993, she and Erskine moved to Pretty Basin Ranch in Darby, Montana where they built their dream home, and enjoyed life as ranchers for nearly 15 years before returning to Hattiesburg in 2007. When Nell was diagnosed with a debilitating neurological disease, Erskine moved heaven and earth to care for her. No stone was left unturned, and Nell called Erskine "the best nurse anyone could want".
Nell was an accomplished pianist and she played regularly for the church she attended, serving for many years as the pianist for the 38th Avenue Baptist Church of Hattiesburg.
Nell Barlow Ross was a loved and loving sister, aunt, wife and faithful friend. She had a pure heart and always selfishly put others in front of her own needs even as she fought the disease that was trying to consume her and she was loved so much. Nell Barlow Ross is survived by her brothers Robert Gerald Barlow, and Douglas Derrick Barlow; eleven nieces and nephews: Mike Barlow, Jenny (Barlow) Demers, William (Billy) Barlow, Carol (Barlow) Nouri), Greg Barlow, Barbie (Barlow) West, Patti (Barlow) Lancaster, Denene (Barlow) Dudley, Derrick (Rick) Barlow, Robert (Rusty) Barlow, Jacque (Barlow) Blackwelder; her three step-daughters: Marianne (Terry) Powers, Carolyn (Mike) Bedenbaugh, and Patricia Ross.
