George T. Crook, Jr.

George Truett Crook, Jr. passed away peacefully in his sleep Sunday, September 30, 2018.
George was born December 25, 1943, in San Diego, CA to the late George Truett Crook, Sr. and Mozelle House Crook.
George received his Master’s Degree in Theatre Arts from the University of California, Davis.  He was commissioned 2nd Lieutenant, United States Army and reported for active duty in August 1967.  He was promoted to 1st Lieutenant in June 1968 and served in Viet Nam with the 82nd Airborne Division until his return in June 1969.  He received several commendations, including the Bronze Star Medal.
He accepted a faculty position at the University of Southern Mississippi in August 1969 in the Department of Theatre and Dance.  During his 34-year tenure, he served as Chair of the Department and was instrumental in the design and construction of the building that currently houses both schools.
George leaves his wife, Joelle Brewer Crook; daughter Dr. Sharon Crook and her husband, Joe Svitak; daughter Tamara Muller and her husband, Jay Muller, all of Tempe, AZ; step-daughter Angela Addison and her husband, Scott Addison; and, step-son Robert Ross, all of Hattiesburg, MS.  He also leaves grandchildren; Lydie Svitak, Levi Svitak, Chris Addison, Zach Ross, and Sam Ross, all of whom affectionately called him “Grumpa”.  He also leaves his sister, Joan Menovcik of Redding, CA; and numerous nieces, nephews, great nieces, great nephews and cousins.
George requested no formal services to be held.  The family will receive friends on Friday, October 5th at Hulett Winstead Funeral Home between the hours of 5:00 and 8:00 P.M.  Memorials may be made to the Department of Theatre at the University of Southern Mississippi, 118 College Drive, Box #5052, Hattiesburg, MS 39406 or The Osher Life Long Learning Institute at the University of Southern Mississippi, 118 College Drive, Box #5055, Hattiesburg, MS 39406
