Helen Sparks Barnes
Services will be held at 11:00 AM Saturday at Hulett-Winstead Funeral Home Chapel for Mrs. Helen Sparks Barnes, 89, of Brooklyn, MS.
She died Monday, June 27, 2016 at her home.
Interment will be in Roseland Park Cemetery.
Mrs. Barnes was a retired English teacher with forty years of service, thirty of which at Forrest County Agricultural High School. After retirement she continued to stay actively involved in school and community affairs. Professionally she was granted various honors. She was a charter member of the Alpha Gamma Chapter of Delta Kappa Gamma and voted Woman of Distinction in 1960. She was chosen Star Teacher at FCAHS numerous times and was also Teacher of the Year in 1985. Mrs. Barnes was also active in a social/service club, The Hummingbird Club, where she served as president. She was a member of Dixie United Methodist Church, but had been a long time member of Brooklyn United Methodist Church.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Charner Davis Barnes of Brooklyn.
She is survived by her only son, Gene and daughter-in-law, Micholyn Barnes; two grandchildren, Kristen Dickey (Tate) and David Barnes; two great-grandchildren, Madolyn and Adam Dickey; two sisters, Sammye Jean Webb of Forest and Betty Logan of Franklinton, LA; two brothers, Tom Sparks of Magee and Smith Sparks of Clinton. In addition, she leaves a host of friends and students whom she loved dearly.
Visitation will begin at 9:00 AM Saturday at Hulett-Winstead Funeral Home.
