James Allen Broome
James Allen Broome, of Hattiesburg, MS left his earthly home Monday, July 20, 2020 after reaching the age of 83 years old. He died peacefully at Asbury Hospice Home, surrounded by family and friends in his last week of life.
Allen was born on June 11, 1937 in Bassfield, MS to Hulon & Viola Broome. As a boy, he lived in the Bethel Community with his parents and nine brothers and sisters. He was raised in a Baptist, faith-filled home where he spent many years honing his green thumb, learning to work hard for what he had, and to value God & his family.
In 1955, he married the love of his life, Bernice Broome. In 1956, they began to grow their family with the birth of their first daughter. Soon after they were consecutively blessed with three more baby girls. Allen was officially outnumbered, but didn’t seem to mind, passing many of the lessons he had learned on to his girls - his work ethic, determination, values, and how to do his favorite thing…garden. They worked their land together, in the Bellevue Community, planting, growing, feeding themselves and others. Allen would eventually teach his grandchildren and his great-grandchildren how to do and value these same things.
He spent many years providing for his family as an independent truck driver. From 1978-2002, he “rolled on”, making countless hauls. His grandchildren always delighted at the sight of the blue truck rolling into the yard, as the horn sounded announcing Papa’s arrival home.
Allen was a strong, patient patriarch of his family, a good friend, and a generous human being. He did his best to take care of his family, guide them, and love them. Gardening was his passion, but family was his purpose. That purpose was felt in every hug, laugh, and tear. He is deeply loved, and will be missed by so many.
Allen is preceded in death by his parents, Hulon & Viola Broome; daughter, Anne Ford; siblings, Hellen Bennett, Doris Stuart, Aaron Broome, & Reevie Broome.
He is survived by his wife of 65 years, Bernice Stuart Broome; three daughters, Marie Carlisle (Carl), Linda Broome, & Regina Herrington (Andy); Son-in-Law Roger Ford; 10 Grandchildren; 15 Great-Grandchildren; 3 brothers, Emmett Broome (Brenda), Jessie Broome (Sonja), & Olis Broome (Carolyn); 2 sisters, Theo Williamson & Edith Harrel (Walter); & numerous nieces and nephews.
Visitation will begin at 9:30am on Thursday, July 23, 2020 at Grantham Cemetery with graveside service to follow at 10:00 am. Pall Bearers are his grandsons, Sam Barr, Jon Barr, Adam Ford, Kent Ford, & Benjamin Ford; and great grandson, Grant Ready.
