James Howard Stone

James Howard Stone, 93, of Hattiesburg died Thursday, February 6, 2020 at his home in Provision Living with his wife, Evelyn, and close friends at his side.

Jim was born in Texas.  He graduated from Texas Tech University with a degree in petroleum engineering. While at Texas Tech, Jim met the love of his life, Evelyn Bowers. They were married and began a life together that took them around the world.  Jim was employed by British American Oil Company, Gulf Oil and Chevron. He was a member and officer of the Society for Petroleum Engineers, the Mississippi Society for Professional Engineers and the Mississippi Pine Belt Chapter, which he served as president.

As a faithful and dedicated member of Parkway Heights United Methodist Church since 1982, he volunteered many hours as the “church engineer”. He could fix anything, and many remember him in his orange jumpsuit with his tool belt ready to work. Jim also volunteered his time at Edwards St. Fellowship Center. Children benefitted from Jim’s interest in science as he volunteered to teach science labs at Lillie Burney Elementary as well as wood working training for Vacation Bible School participants.
