Joan Green James

Mrs. Joan Green James died September 10, 2021, at her home in Petal, MS.

She is preceded in death by her husband of 61 years, Dr. Billy James, her parents William and Ruby Green, and her brother Ret. Col. William Green.

She is survived by her four children, Ron James (Cindy) of Meridian, Penny Barr (Sammy) of Petal, Major General Tom James (Nicole) of Colorado Springs, CO, and Rick James (Shannon) of Huntsville, AL; twelve grandchildren, Robert James (Jessica), Andrew James (Morgan), Vanessa Caudill (Brett), Sam Barr, Jon Barr (Erin), Katie Barr, Taylor James (Marci), Hayley Corder (Paul), Tucker James, Rachel James, McKenna Fowler (Michael), Kylie Larson (Josh); and nineteen great-grandchildren.

Joan was born on July 20, 1929, in Columbus, MS. She attended Mississippi State College for Women (now MUW) and graduated from the University of Mississippi. She assisted her husband in his medical practice but her favorite job was taking care of her family. She was well known for her quick wit and service to others.

Joan was a dedicated member of Petal United Methodist Church for over 60 years. She loved teaching Sunday School, was chairman of the lay ministry, member of Heart to Heart card ministry, and active in United Methodist Women, specifically the Ruth Circle. An avid reader, she instilled a love of books in many family members. She enjoyed crafting, traveling, assembling jigsaw puzzles, and was an expert solver of word puzzles. She leaves a legacy of love for Jesus Christ and family.

Services will be held Thursday, September 16th at 11:00 A.M. at Petal United Methodist with visitation at 10:00 A.M. Interment will follow at Hillcrest Cemetery in Petal, MS. Memorials may be made to Petal United Methodist Church.
