Josie S. Guess

After a brief illness, Mrs. Josie S. Guess slipped peacefully into the arms of Jesus on February 13, at Provision Living, Hattiesburg.

Josie was born in Poplarville, MS on July 29, 1931, the first born child of parents Walter R. Smith and Bertha M. Smith. She attended Poplarville High School and Pearl River Community College before marrying the love of her life, Jesse M. Guess, in 1951. They enjoyed a genuine partnership of almost sixty-four years, raising two daughters before retiring to enjoy spending time with their family, traveling the country together, and sharing a wide variety of wonderful adventures.

Josie was employed by the Pearl River County School District and the Poplarville School District before moving on to several years of employment with Hancock Bank in Poplarville. She was an active member of her church and was involved in a variety of civic organizations. However, in her eyes her most important role was that of a loving wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother. From preparing elaborate holiday meals, to planning family gatherings, to attending and cheering on each and every school performance, she was in her element when lifting up her husband, her children and grandchildren.

The final chapters of her life were spent enjoying the love and companionship of the fellow residents and staff of Provision Living Assisted Living Facility. She relished spending her days watching the birds out her window and enjoying the company of the loving staff as she shared her chocolates along with a generous helping of hugs. Josie's family is eternally grateful for the love and affection shown their mother by the Provision staff, especially throughout the quarantine period brought about by Covid-19.

In addition to her parents, Josie was preceded in death by her beloved husband Jesse, who passed from this life in 2015. Also preceding her were her two sisters, Bobbie Brooks of Kentwood, LA, and Martha Jo Miller of Poplarville, MS, and three brothers, Walter Billy Smith, Cowart Smith and Tommy Smith, all of Poplarville.

Left to cherish her memory are her daughters, Belinda G. Jackson and Jessie G. Williamson, grandson Jess Jackson, his wife Courtney and their son Thomas J., Hunter Williamson and Samuel Williamson all of Hattiesburg, Charie Hathorn, her husband Chris and their children Amelia Claire and Daniel of Petal.

Services for Josie will be private due to Covid concerns.
