Major Kelly J. Sanchez, USMC (RET)
Hattiesburg, MS - Major Kelly J. Sanchez, USMC, Retired, age 87, passed away at his home in Hattiesburg, MS on October 30, 2018, following a brief illness.
Kelly was born is White Castle, LA on April 3, 1931 to Paul and Inez Sanchez. After graduation from White Castle High School, he enlisted in the Marine Corps in June 1948. He completed four years of service with one year spent in Korea. Deciding on a career in the Marines, he reenlisted and spent several years as a noncommissioned officer. After 24 years of service in the Marines, he retired as a Major. Kelly's tours of duty included Washington, DC, North Carolina, South Carolina and a brief time in California. He served in Vietnam and served three tours to Okinawa. His final tour was in Kansas City, MO where he served in the USMC Finance Center. After retirement, he remained in the Kansas City area for several years; then made the decision to move to his wife's home state of MS. They moved to Petal in 1985 and later moved to Hattiesburg.
Kelly was preceded in death by his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Paul Sanchez; his brother, Richard Sanchez "Pete" and his sister, Joyce Landry.
Kelly is survived by his wife of 42 years, Peggy A. Sellers Sanchez; two sisters, Doris Glass (Eddie) of Plaquemine, LA and Mildred Fabre (Floyd) of Baton Rouge, LA; one brother, Shelton Sanchez (Geneva) of Belle Rose, LA and several nieces and nephews.
Kelly was a member of Heritage United Methodist Church in Hattiesburg. He loved his church and enjoyed attending Sunday School. he loved church music and especially enjoyed the choir of which his wife is a part and his dear friend Andrew LeBlanc is the director.
There will be a service of celebration for Kelly at Heritage United Methodist Church on Saturday, November 17, 2018. Visitation will begin at 9:30 A.M. preceding the 11:00 A.M. service.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorial contributions be made to Heritage UMC Choir Fund.
