A celebration honoring the life of Lenda Charlene (Remy) Powell will be at 1:00 p.m. Thursday at Hullett-Winstead Funeral Home, Purvis, MS with  Rev. Ken Roberts officiating. Interment will be at Coaltown Cemetery with Military Honors under the direction of Hulett-Winstead Funeral Home.
Lenda, 57, her sunset was on  2/03/2019 peacefully at her home with her husband and family at her side.

Lenda’s Sunrise was August 3, 1961 in Oklahoma City, OK to Dale and Lillie Remy. At a young age the family moved to Mountain Park, OK where she grew up and attended Mountain Park Public School where Lenda was known well for her basketball skills. She was a member of FFA during High School. Lenda graduated from Mountain Park High in 1979
In November 1982 she became a Nationally Registered Emergency Medical Technician and then went to work for the Anadarko Ambulance Service.  In 1986 the Ambulance Service and Anadarko Fire Department combined and Lenda cross trained as a firefighter.  After leaving the Ambulance Service she worked filing insurance for the Anadarko Municipal Hospital. She also worked for Cyril Ambulance Service at that time.

Lenda served in the United States Army from August 31, 1988 to October 25, 1988. In December 1993 she enlisted in the Mississippi Army National Guard completing Basic training at Fort Jackson, South Carolina in February - April 1994 and her Advanced Individual Training at Aberdeen Proving Grounds, Maryland in April - August 1994. Lenda then went to work at CSMS, Camp Shelby, Mississippi, as a Tool and Parts Attendant until December 1999. She worked at RSMS, Camp Shelby, MS from 2003 until 2004. Lenda worked at Camp Shelby Police Department as a Access Control officer from September 2006 until March 2008. In March 2008 she worked for Security Consultant Group as a security officer providing armed security for FEMA trailers until June 2009.

Lenda married Richard W. Powell on March 15, 2001 and they made their home in Purvis, MS.

Family meant everything to Lenda and she will be missed greatly by all. Step and half were not in her vocabulary, her children were not STEP and her brothers were not HALF. They were all whole.  She made friends easily and had made many while serving in the MS Army National Guard and employment at Camp Shelby.

Lenda is survived by her best friend and husband, Richard W. Powell, of the home. 3 sons Sean Michael Powell, Purvis, MS; Darrell Bradley Powell, Ovett, Ms and Richard Brent Powell and wife Angie, Purvis, Ms. 5 brothers, Gary Dale Melton, of the home in Purvis, MS; Bobby Melton, Snyder, Ok; Earl Melton, Mountain Park, Ok; Darrell Melton and wife Carol, Coalgate, Ok and Eddie Remy and wife Aimee, Weatherford, Ok. 2 sisters Becky Goldman and husband Jack, Frederick, Ok and Sharon Ray and husband Tony, Mountain Park, OK.  2 grandsons Justin Guest, Saltillo, MS and Parker Powell, Ovett, MS. 3 granddaughters Alex Powell, Hattiesburg, MS; Cady Wells and husband Dylan, Purvis, MS and Allison Freeman and husband Troy, Purvis, MS. A great granddaughter, Madilyn Wells and a great grandson Camden Wells both of Purvis, MS. 2 brothers-in-law David M. Powell and wife Phyllis of New Jersey and Mark E. Foss of Purvis, MS., and numerous aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews and cousins.

Her extended family is sister Sandy and Bill Carter, sister Paula and Brett Bean, sister Tami and Dwight Waffle, brother Larry and Susie Clements, brother Brian and Erin Clements, Mark and her adopted daughter Terri Dortch and her daughters Kaithlyn and Arabiah that called her Gran, and her adopted daughter Mindy Ladner and her partner Trisha. She also has 5 children from her previous marriage to Kenneth Reed, Kimberly Reed McCracken, Melissa Reed Vail, Kendrick Devin Reed, Ashli Reed Salazar and Andrew Caleb Reed all of Oklahoma.

Lenda was preceded in death by her parents, a brother Tommie Lee Gee, her maternal grandmother Cleo Smith, paternal grandparents David Edward and Maggie Pearl Remy, her in- laws Wayne and Mildred Powell, daughter-in-law Lawanda Powell, 2 nephews Charles Ray Melton and Michael Allen Calvin, sister-in-law Jan Melton and sister Teresa Dickson.

The family would like  to give special thanks to Forest General Hospital Hospice for the love and care shown to Lenda and the family during her final days especially, her nurse Nadia and nurse assistant Liz.
