Marcelle Selph of Purvis, MS passed away on July 25,2017. She was 97 years of age. She was a long time member of the First Baptist Church of Purvis.
Marcelle was born June 17, 1920 to Sarah and T.W. Davis, Sr. in Purvis, MS.
She was preceded in death by her parents; husbands, Major Malcolm Sumrall, and Ed Selph; brother, T. W. Davis, Jr.; sisters, Mildred Hendrick, Aileen Davis, Maureen Salter, and Octavia Davis.
Ms. Selph was a graduate of Hillman College and Mississippi Southern College (now USM). She was a well known educator and dance instructor, having taught first grade for many years in the Long Beach, MS public school system and then Purvis, MS until her retirement in 1980. Prior to teaching first grade, she studied dance at Haines & Morton's School of Dancing in New Orleans, becoming a Certified Dance Instructor. She then opened Marcelle's School of Dance in Purvis, and for several years she gave many young students their introduction to the world of dancing and performing in recitals. Her love of dance carried over into her first grade pageants, which were very popular with students and parents alike.
Ms. Selph is survived by her children, Sara "Sunny" Davis of Hattiesburg, MS, Mac Sumrall (Jan) of Birmingham, AL, Steve Selph of Purvis, MS; niece, Yuba Sotile of Fort Walton Beach, FL; grandchildren, Scott Davis (Cheri) of Wiggins, MS, Marcie Dyal (Jonathan) of Gulfport, MS, and Ryan Sumrall of Birmingham, AL; five great-grandchildren, and two great-great-grandchildren.
Visitation will be 9:00-11:00 AM Friday at Hulett-Winstead Funeral Home Purvis Chapel with graveside services at 11:30 AM in Coaltown Cemetery.
