Mary Virginia Welker
Mary Virginia Boyles Welker, 90, of Hattiesburg died Saturday, October 6, at her home. Visitation will be held at Parkway Heights United Methodist Church on Saturday, October 13, from 9 a.m. until services begin at 11. Interment will follow at Highland Cemetery. Hulett-Winstead Funeral Home is handling arrangements.
She was the daughter of the late Rev. Andrew J. Boyles and Stella Mae Bible Boyles, moving with them as her father was assigned to Methodist congregations throughout south and central Mississippi. They lived in New Augusta when she was born, in Hattiesburg, on Sept. 5, 1928. She entered elementary school in Bay St. Louis and graduated from Central High School in Jackson. Mrs. Welker was a member of Kappa Delta Sorority at Millsaps College, graduating in 1950 with a B.A. in psychology. She lived for a number of years in Natchez, where her husband worked for the public school system. In Hattiesburg she was a member of PEO, and since 1966 she had been a member of Parkway Heights United Methodist Church, where she was in a circle of the United Methodist Women and in the Katie Rose McClendon Class.
She is survived by her husband of 68 years, Dr. L. Conrad Welker; daughters Susan Ratcliff (Marty) of Slidell, La., Jan Nielsen of Hattiesburg, and Carol Krohn (Steve) of Charlottesville, Va.; grandchildren Karen Ratcliff Evans (Mike), Tracey Ratcliff Scharf (Matthew), Elizabeth Ratcliff Garver (Andrew), Katie Nielsen Simour (Zakaria), Misha Nielsen, Joseph Krohn, and Peter Krohn; and four great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by an infant daughter, Diane Marie.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Parkway Heights United Methodist Church.
