Rev. Bartis Benton Harper
Services will be held at 10:30 AM Friday at Hulett-Winstead Funeral Home Chapel for Rev. Bartis Benton Harper, 87, of Hattiesburg, MS.
He died Tuesday, September 5, 2017 at Regency Hospital.
Interment will be in Highland Cemetery. Dr. Frank Gunn will officiate the services.
Bartis Harper was a man who inspired so many people. He love people and always looked for the best in everyone.
Bro. Harper was a graduate of U.S.M. earning his B.S. Degree. He also did graduate work during which time he surrendered to the ministry. While at Southern, he received various awards and honors. He was selected as a charter member of the U.S.M. Alumni Association serving as its President in 1963. He was also inducted into the Hall of Fame.
A graduate of Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary in Ft. Worth, TX, he earned his Bachelor of Divinity Degree and his Master of Divinity. During his pastorage, he served as a Trustee of Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary from 1984 to 1993.
While serving churches in Mississippi, Bro Harper was a member of the Mississippi Baptist Convention Board for ten years and served as chairman of several committees. He was a very active Pastor not only in Mississippi but in Texas and Alabama. He was a member of Main Street Baptist Church and served as a Chaplain for the Forrest General Hospital Hospice Program for several years.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Bura V. Harper and MInnie Welch Harper, two sisters and one brother.
He is survived by his wife, Mary Kate Bowling Harper; one daughter, Teresa Tynes; one granddaughter, Allison Skaggs; one brother, John Harper; one sister, Adriene Campbell; several nephews, nieces and a host of friends.
