Willie Hugh Dickerson

Heaven gained one of the funniest grandfathers around on New Year’s Eve. Willie Hugh Dickerson, 90, of Hattiesburg, MS went to be with the LORD on Friday, December 31, 2021, at the Claiborne of Hattiesburg. The fireworks and celebration were certainly a tribute to his lively personality.

He was born on August 24, 1931, in Indianola, MS, to Fred Eugene Dickerson and Edith Blanche Carwile. He attended High School at Indianola Public school in Indianola, MS. In 1951, he joined the United States Air Force during the Korean conflict. After serving four years, he received an honorable discharge in 1954. In 1956, Mr. Dickerson married the love of his life, Shirley Hope Filler, in Indianola, MS. He worked as a barber until he was 81 years old, a perfect career for a man who never met a stranger. He was an avid reader, often reading several newspapers a day, and his love for Ole Miss and knowledge of SEC football statistics were unmatched. He was charming in his prime, lived for his wife's delicious cooking, could cut a rug on the dance floor into his 80's, said every honorable skill his grandchildren displayed was learned from him, and could sing his heart out at a good southern Baptist church. He is gone, but certainly not forgotten, and his colorful stories will live on through the beautiful legacy he left, his family.

He is preceded in death by his parents, Fred Dickerson and Edith Carwile Dickerson, brother, Sam Dickerson from Memphis, TN, sister, Jean McPherson of Indianola, MS.

He is survived by his wife of 65 years, Shirley Hope Filler Dickerson of Hattiesburg, MS; two sisters, Mary Faulkner of Fort Worth, TX and Betty Westmoreland of Brandon, MS;  two daughters, Connie Dickerson Fox of Hattiesburg, MS and Lisa Dickerson Johnson of Little Rock, AR, and five grandchildren, Virginia Fox Laakman of Oklahoma City, OK, Caroline Fox King of Madison, MS, Ethan Michael Johnson of Washington, DC, Sarah Ashley Johnson of Dallas, TX, and Henry Creed Fox, Jr. of Nashville, TN.

Memorial Services will be held at a late date.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Saint Jude Children's Research Hospital.
