Wilma Jane Powers Gower
Wilma Jane Powers Gower passed away peacefully on August 23, 2021.
A visitation will be held at 2:00 P.M. with a Celebration of Life service at 3:00 P. M. at Main Street United Methodist Church, 712 North Main Street, Hattiesburg, MS. on September 18, 2021. Come join us. Masks are welcome but not required. A private inurnment will be held at a later date.
Wilma had celebrated her 100th birthday on August 5, 2021.
She is survived by her five children, Bill Gower, Gerry (Jim) Edwards, Jamie (Karen) Gower of Hattiesburg, MS, John (Peggy) Gower of Vancleave, MS, and Kenny Gower of Brandon, MS; Grandchildren, Jimmy (Amber) Edwards, Noah Gower, Amy Gower, Jonathan Gower and three Great-Grandchildren.
She was predeceased by her husband Dr. William T. Gower, her parents Lewis and Wilhelmina Powers, and six brothers and one sister.
Wilma was born in Iowa City, Iowa on August 5, 1921. She graduated from the University of Iowa in music, she was a member of Phi Mu Sorority. Her French horn prowess soon earned her the Principal French horn position in the Houston Symphony in Houston, Texas.
Wilma moved to Hattiesburg in 1963 with her husband and five children. After retiring from music, she was employed in the registrarís office of the University of Southern Mississippi. Together Wilma and Bill celebrated 58 years of marriage before his passing in 2003.
Wilma was known for her kind, gentle demeanor as well as being able to welcome friend and stranger alike with an open heart and a smile on her face. She will truly be missed by all who knew her.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the William T. Gower Orchestra Scholarship Endowment at the University of Southern Mississippi or to Homes of Hope for Children.
